Napa Valley Transportation Authority Receives $6.3 Million for Six New Zero-Emissions Buses

The Napa Valley Transportation Authority has received a grant award of $6,341,892 from the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Low- and No-Emission Vehicle Program. NVTA will use these funds to purchase six new zero-emission buses and develop workforce training for battery electric bus technology.

“The Napa Valley is a world-class destination, and it’s critical to have world-class transit to meet the needs and expectations of residents, workers, and tourists,” said NVTA Chair Liz Alessio. “Moving to a clean, electric bus fleet is crucial to the health of the environment and the local economy; electric buses reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions while preparing transit workers for new and emerging vehicle technology. We are on our way to meeting our goal of an all-electric fleet by 2030.”

“With today’s awards, we’re helping communities across America – in cities, suburbs, and rural areas alike – purchase more than 1,800 new buses, and most of them are zero-emission, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “Funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this announcement means more good jobs for people across the country, cleaner air in our communities, and more affordable and reliable options to help people get to where they need to go.”

Vine riders should see these six new electric buses in service in 2024. The existing fleet of Vine Transit’s zero-emission buses will go into service in September 2022 in the Cities of Napa and St. Helena, and the Town of Yountville.

FTA’s Low or No Emission (No-Low) Grant Program, which awarded the multimillion-dollar grant to NVTA, makes funding available to help transit agencies buy or lease American-built low or noemission vehicles.

The FTA received 530 eligible project proposals totaling about $7.72 billion in requests; they awarded $1.66 billion in grants to 150 projects in 48 states and territories.
