2025 Update — Final Report

Explore the Travel Behavior Study in a data visualizer.

The Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) launched the 2025 Napa Valley Travel Behavior Study (TBS 2025) to analyze how residents, employees, and visitors travel throughout Napa County—by car, transit, bicycle, and on foot.

Building upon previous studies completed in 2014 and 2019, this update uses advanced data collection methods, including surveys, GPS-based trip data, and demographic analysis, to capture post-pandemic travel patterns and emerging mobility trends. The findings will help NVTA and local jurisdictions refine the Napa Travel Model, guide transit route planning, inform the Countywide Transportation Plan, and support data-driven grant applications for future transportation investments.

The study’s final products include the TBS 2025 Final Report and an interactive visualizer tool. The report summarizes key insights on trip purposes, commute trends, and travel modes across Napa County, while the visualizer provides an interactive dashboard with maps and charts that display how people move within and between communities. Users can explore travel data by mode, time of day, and trip purpose, offering a clear picture of how mobility patterns have evolved since the previous studies.

2024 Update
In 2019, Napa Valley Transportation Authority contracted with Fehr & Peers to update the Napa Valley Travel Behavior Study (click link to review/download the final report). The first study was completed in 2014, with another update planned for the summer of 2024. Updating the Travel Behavior Study provides refined data using more sophisticated collection methodologies. NVTA staff and jurisdictions can use the information to update the Napa Travel Model, plans, studies, and grant applications.

The goal of the Travel Behavior Study is to understand travel demand and patterns to refine the Napa Travel Model and inform associated efforts such as transit route planning and the Countywide Transportation Plan. The study focuses on gathering Napa Valley transportation modal data related to employment, residents, and visitors. It will further help Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) and all six jurisdictions understand commute patterns, modes of travel and trip purpose.
