What is the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program?

The GRH program is provided by the Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) through the V-Commute platform to encourage commuters to use an alternative mode other than driving alone to work or to school in Napa County by providing financial relief to get home in the event of an emergency.

First and foremost, don’t worry about logging your trip or the reimbursement process, take care of your emergency first. V-Commute staff will always be here to help you through the reimbursement process after you have taken care of your emergency.

Who is eligible for GRH reimbursement?

Must be 18 years or older
Must work or go to College in Napa County
Used an alternative to driving alone to get to the work or college on day GRH is needed
Must have a V-Commute account and log trip to work or college for the day of GRH trip on V-Commute

How many times can I use this program?

You are eligible to be reimbursed up to four (4) GRH trips per calendar year

When can I get reimbursed for a GRH trip?

You must request reimbursement within two weeks of your GRH trip. You must already be enrolled in the program.

Request reimbursement in the Program Rewards area in your V-Commute account.

You can redeem reimbursement requests under the following circumstances:

Personal or family illness or emergency
Home emergency
Elder care or day care emergency
Bicycle theft or breakdown
Unforeseen change of work schedule
Carpool partner emergency resulted in loss of ride home

What if I have multiple receipts for my GRH?

We know that sometimes it takes a few modes to get where you need to be in an emergency. If you have multiple receipts, submit all of your trip receipts with your application.

What if my destination is not home?

The destinations that qualify for reimbursement are as follows:

Commuter’s home
Hospital or urgent care
Day care facility or K-12 school
Elder care
Local transit station
Park-and-Ride lot

What types of trips or reasons are NOT covered?

Transit delays or disruptions
Personal errands or appointments
Transportation to a doctor or hospital resulting from an on-the-job injury (GRH cannot be used to replace an employer’s legal responsibility under workers compensation regulations.)
Natural disasters
Ride to work
Taking an Uber or Lyft to work is not a qualifying alternative commute mode
Carpool App provider cannot find a match to get the commuter home
Business-related travel
Non-emergency side trips
Commuters are not eligible for reimbursement if they are covered by a separate employer-sponsored GRH program
Other reasons that may be deemed as invalid use of GRH program, as determined by the program administrator

What kind of transit qualifies for getting me where I need to go in an emergency?

GRH program participants decide how to get home (or to any other qualified GRH destination) whether it’s via a taxi, ride-hailing app, transit or combination, the choice is yours!

Where does the money for the GRH program come from?

The V-Commute Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) Program is made possible by funding through Napa Valley Transportation Authority’s Travel Demand Management Program.
