The SR 29 Corridor Improvement Project in American Canyon is a collaborative effort between NVTA, the City of American Canyon, and Caltrans. Building on feedback from the April 2025 community workshop, NVTA is refining the project details to enhance the busy roadway. Join us to learn about the project and share your feedback!

Project Description

NVTA is working with Caltrans and American Canyon on multimodal and operational improvements to Highway 29 between Napa Junction and American Canyon Road. The Project Initiation Document (PID) builds off the prior study completed as part of the Highway 29 Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan (CMCP), which was released in 2020.

Regionally, SR 29 provides direct connection between Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties in the North Bay. Locally, SR 29 is also the lifeblood of access into and out of Napa County. Because the SR 29 corridor functions as American Canyon’s “Main Street,” it experiences significant safety, aesthetic, and operations issues between Napa Junction and American Canyon Road.

Following a corridor intersection analysis and community engagement process, the NVTA Board of Directors and American Canyon City Council selected the signalized corridor as the Preferred Alternative in February 2026. The roundabout alternative will not be carried forward.

The preferred alternative includes upgraded transit stops, transit signal priority for buses, bus lanes, continuous bike and pedestrian paths, buried utility lines, curb ramps and crosswalks at all intersections, and landscaping improvements throughout the corridor.

Project Goals

  • Improve corridor operations for all modes of travel.
  • Improve safety through Vision Zero Safe System Approaches.
  • Improve public transit travel time and reliability.
  • Increase multimodal options for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Support growth in American Canyon’s priority development areas.
  • Improve regional and local circulation.

Cost: Pre-construction – $20 million, Construction – $55 million

Status:

  • Traffic forecast model approved and traffic analysis work underway

Schedule (pending funding)

  • 2023 – PID approval (complete)
  • 2024-26 – Environmental
  • 2027-28 – Design
  • 2027-28 – Right-of-way
  • 2029 – Construction (funding dependent)

February 2026

Following a corridor intersection analysis completed by Kimley-Horn and community input gathered at the April 2025 workshop, the NVTA Board of Directors and American Canyon City Council selected the signalized corridor with multimodal improvements at six intersections as the Preferred Alternative. The roundabout alternative (Build Alternative 2) will not be carried forward.

April 30, 2025: NVTA hosted its first community meeting on SR29 American Canyon Corridor Improvements. Read a detailed summary of the workshop, including community feedback, project details and photos. See the materials and boards presented during the workshop.

History

In April 2022, the Napa Valley Transportation Authority, the City of American Canyon, and Caltrans held a virtual presentation of the two proposed alternatives for the improvements to State Route (SR) 29 through American Canyon. This presentation was open to the public, and anyone was welcome to attend. This project included a brief presentation by the project team. The presentation summarized the overall project, discussed the two selected alternatives, and provided an overview of the next steps for the PA/ED Phase. Following the presentation, attendees were invited to ask questions and share comments with NVTA, the City of American Canyon, Caltrans, and project team representatives.

On October 4, 2021, the Napa Valley Transportation Authority and the City of American Canyon held a public meeting for the Highway 29 American Canyon Multimodal Improvement Project. To watch the meeting, go to youtu.be/5VhiHyCKAKA.

The project purpose:

  • Improve mobility for all users
  • Improve safety for all users through Vision Zero
  • Eliminate overhead utility poles
  • Improve corridor aesthetics
  • Reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by encouraging transportation mode shift
  • Improve access to businesses along SR 29
  • Improve accessibility for all modes of transportation

The project need:

Regionally, SR 29 provides direct connection between Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties in the North Bay. Locally, SR 29 is also the lifeblood of access into and out of Napa County. Vehicle volumes on SR 29 are comparable to other nearby state highways SR 12 and SR 37. However, because the SR 29 corridor functions as American Canyon’s “Main Street,” it experience significant safety, aesthetic, and operations issues between Napa Junction and American Canyon Road. Some of the most pronounced issues of the corridor include:

  • Lack of multimodal connectivity – particularly for bicycle and pedestrian access – along and across SR 29
  • Lack of low-stress routing options for bicyclists and pedestrians along SR 29
  • Lack of public transit lanes, facilities and pullouts for stops
  • Lack of aesthetic benefits like landscaping to help define American Canyon’s Main Street
  • Regional traffic congestion which hinders access to American Canyon’s commercial business
  • Constraints at intersections that cause extensive queueing, bottlenecks and delays
