NVTA Receives $3 Million for Improvements to Highway 29 in American Canyon
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) approved $1.5 million in federal funding for highway improvements on Highway 29 in American Canyon. This award will match the $1.5 million already approved by MTC in January and brings the total to $3 million in federal transportation funds to complete the environmental review for improvements to Highway 29 from Napa Junction Road to American Canyon Road.
This funding comes after NVTA recently completed the project initiation document (PID), a Caltrans requirement, before initiating the next phase of environmental review. The environmental review will explore two alternatives – with each alternative including separated north-south bicycle and pedestrian facilities, utility undergrounding, and aesthetic improvements along the state highway corridor.
The two alternatives are:
- The “Transit Plus Alternative,” which would provide upgraded passenger amenities and transit queue jumps (dedicated bus lanes) at the intersections to create faster transit service.
- The “Roundabout Alternative,” which would provide new roundabouts at various intersections to improve their safety and operations.
Both alternatives will also include enhanced intersection crossings to facilitate the east and west movement of pedestrians and bicyclists.
“The funding we secured from MTC allows NVTA to advance a deeply needed project in southern Napa County,” said Napa County Supervisor and MTC Chair Alfredo Pedroza. “These funds represent a critical investment in our region, and today we celebrate taking another step toward advancing traffic and safety improvements along Highway 29.”
Mayor Leon Garcia noted, “American Canyon appreciates Supervisor Pedroza’s efforts as MTC Chair to secure funding for the next phase of this project. As American Canyon’s Mayor and a fellow NVTA Board Member, I am very proud of the work completed to date. I am excited to see the continued implementation of our shared vision of this gateway to the Napa Valley.”
